Press Release – People’s Movement for Change Condemns Expulsion of Ambassador Ebrahim
The People’s Movement for Change (PMC) strongly condemns the unjust expulsion of Ambassador Ebrahim Rasool by the United States of America. This act not only undermines diplomatic relations but also represents a deliberate attempt to destabilize South Africa’s international standing and sovereignty.
As articulated by Marius Fransman, a party president and leader in our movement, we believe this expulsion is part of a broader narrative aimed at undermining South Africa. “I would think that there is a plot. What we need to do is for the two heads of state to meet. What we see, what we really see, is a narrative, a soft coup,” Fransman stated.
We recognize Ambassador Rasool’s long-standing expertise and strategic acumen in navigating complex political landscapes. His expulsion comes at a time when South Africa’s engagement with global issues, including its stance on the Palestinian matter, has never been more crucial. As Fransman pointed out, “Rasool is a strategist. Ibrahim is someone who, for example, understands the nuanced issues and the fault lines in society.”
This move by the USA echoes previous unfounded allegations against South Africa, including the baseless claims about weapon transportation to Ukraine. “We had a US ambassador, was it two years ago, or more, who talked about South Africa transporting weapons to Ukraine through Russia. So we all knew that this was not true,” Fransman noted, highlighting a pattern of misinformation and strategic manipulation.
The PMC calls upon the ANC and the South African government not to abandon Ambassador Rasool. “We call on the ANC and the government representation, not to abandon Rasool. Because he is not a rookie diplomat, he has been there and has studied diplomacy, so he could think about what his speech’s reactions would be,” emphasized Fransman.
We urge President Cyril Ramaphosa to assemble a team, including former President Thabo Mbeki and other experienced diplomats, to address this issue with their US counterparts. It is imperative that we stand united in defense of our nation’s interests and our esteemed representatives.
In light of the upcoming 2026 elections, PMC remains steadfast in its commitment to disrupting the status quo and fostering a progressive agenda both domestically and internationally. As Fransman stated, “The fundamentals of the policy formation of the old ANC are still relevant, and that’s why the PMC talks about family, community, and opportunity, and to try and drive an agenda, an international solidarity agenda.”
Together, we must ensure that Ambassador Rasool’s contributions are recognized and that he continues to play a pivotal role in shaping South Africa’s diplomatic future. We call for his reassignment in another suitable capacity where his experience and vision can continue to benefit the nation.
