Press Release – People’s Movement for Change: Upholding Transformation and Unity Amidst Threats from Segregationist Agendas and Foreign Corporate Interests

Cape Town, May 25, 2025 – The People’s Movement for Change (PMC) vehemently opposes any initiatives that attempt to undermine South Africa’s democratic processes and further marginalize its people. We stand firmly against the recent activities of AfriForum and the Cape Independence Advocacy Group, whose agendas threaten to impose new forms of segregation through their misguided and divisive calls for a Western Cape Independence referendum. Simultaneously, we oppose the relaxation of B-BBEE requirements for foreign businesses like Starlink, spearheaded by Elon Musk, which undermine our sovereignty and transformative efforts. 

Historical Context and Persistent Injustices 

As we strive to heal and rebuild from centuries of colonialism and apartheid, it’s paramount to remember the original custodians of this land—our First Nation Indigenous People. Long before Jan van Riebeeck’s arrival in 1652, the Khoi and San communities were the rightful owners and stewards of South African territories. Their struggles, epitomized by the Battle of Salt River and countless other resistances, underscore the need for true transformation and justice today. 

The Role of B-BBEE in Transformation 

The Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) policy is a cornerstone of our nation’s commitment to addressing historical inequalities and ensuring economic inclusion for all disadvantaged groups. By advocating for foreign businesses to comply fully with these standards, we reinforce our dedication to true equity and justice. 

Opposition to Segregationist Agendas 

AfriForum and the Cape Independence Advocacy Group’s campaigns are nothing short of attempts to resurrect segregation under the guise of regional autonomy. Their calls for a Western Cape Independence referendum are not just impractical but dangerously divisive, threatening to unravel the progress made in uniting our diverse nation. This push for independence is ill-conceived and seeks to fragment our beloved country further instead of fostering unity and cooperation.

Economic and Sovereignty Risks with Starlink 

Elon Musk’s critical stance against B-BBEE and his promotion of false narratives, such as the myth of “white genocide,” underscore the risks posed by allowing Starlink to operate under relaxed regulations: 

Undermining Transformative Policies: 

• Bypassing B-BBEE requirements for Starlink could erode the framework designed to ensure economic equity, setting a precedent that may weaken long-term transformative efforts . 

Ethical and Social Implications: 

• Musk’s public misrepresentation of South Africa’s land and empowerment policies fuels division and undermines social cohesion. Granting his company exceptions could be seen as condoning these harmful narratives . 

Legal and Diplomatic Repercussions: 

• Exempting Starlink from B-BBEE compliance may lead to legal challenges and diplomatic tensions, both domestically and internationally. Ensuring fair and consistent application of laws is critical for maintaining legal integrity and international respect . 

Upholding Democratic Integrity 

AfriForum’s Disruptive Tactics: 

• By consistently opposing transformation policies and advocating for regressive measures, AfriForum seeks to maintain historical inequalities rather than support inclusive growth and justice. Their actions are a direct threat to our democratic integrity and social cohesion. 

Cape Independence Advocacy Group’s Folly: 

• The push by the Cape Independence Advocacy Group for a Western Cape exit from South Africa is not only ludicrous but also counterproductive. It is an agenda that panders to narrow interests at the expense of the broader national good. 

People’s Movement for Change’s Stance 

The People’s Movement for Change calls upon all South Africans to reject these divisive and regressive agendas. We must remain committed to the principles of unity, transformation, and inclusion as enshrined in our democratic framework. Any amendments to our policies should prioritize the collective interest and honor the historical context of our nation.
