The People’s Movement for Change (PMC) vehemently condemns the unjust and oppressive action taken by Cricket South Africa at Newlands Cricket Ground, prohibiting the display of the Palestinian flag during a recent match. This suppression of free expression goes against the principles of democracy and equality that South Africa has ardently fought for.

“South Africa, with its enduring struggle against apartheid, understands the weight of oppression all too well,” stated PMC National Spokesperson, Faizal Daniels. “South Africa is an apartheid-free zone, and it’s utterly unacceptable that such censorship is tolerated in our democratic landscape. Had it been an American or Israeli flag, there would likely have been no issue, revealing a blatant double standard.”

The utilisation of the South African Police Service (SAPS) by Cricket South Africa (CSA) as a means of stifling free speech is a concerning abuse of power. It is unacceptable that SAPS is being used as a private security enforcer for CSA’s pro-apartheid stance. The Minister of Police owes the public an explanation as to why law enforcement was deployed to suppress a fundamental right. The heavy-handedness witnessed during this incident, reminiscent of tactics employed against Palestinians by the IDF and during South Africa’s apartheid era, is alarming.

“The physical force exerted by the police, including the mishandling of women, as evidenced in footage, is reminiscent of the unjust force wielded against black and brown individuals during apartheid,” added Daniels. “Cape Town must not become a sanctuary for those seeking to justify or perpetuate apartheid-like practices.”

The People’s Movement for Change calls for an immediate investigation into this incident, demanding accountability from Cricket South Africa and the responsible authorities. Such actions undermine the values of inclusivity and freedom upon which South Africa’s hard-fought democracy stands.
